Pack 131 Sweeps District Pinewood Derby

Date: 28 April, 18:19

Pack 131 Sweeps Pellissippi District Pinewood Derby

Clinton’s Cub Scout Pack 131 continued its winning ways at the Pellissippi District Pinewood Derby taking all three top spots.  William Winstead, a second year Webelos, finished first with a silver, flat car.  Garrett Kirby, also a second-year Webelos, came in second with a flat, purple and gold surf board design.  In third place was Julian Young, a first year Webelos, with a thin blue wedge car.

This year’s District Derby was held by Pack 73 in Norris on April 12, 2008.  Each of the Pellissippi District’s eighteen active packs was eligible to send their top finishers in their pack derby to the district competition.  Over twenty cars were present and ready to race.

These three scouts are not new to the winner’s circle.  William placed first in the district race last year, finished first in this year’s pack derby and third in last year’s pack derby.  In the last two years of district derby competition, William’s cars did not lose an individual race.

Garrett posted an exemplary derby record in his five years as a Cub Scout.  He placed first in his den race four out of five years, won the pack derby three times, competed in the district derby each of the five years where he placed three times.

Julian won his den each of the last two years, finished second in this year’s pack derby and third in last year’s pack derby.  He narrowly missed placing third in last year’s district race.  Most importantly, he still has a year of eligibility and promises to do great things in the 2009 pinewood derby season.

BSA - Webelos Invitational Campout

Date: 02 April, 14:38 | Related item: BSA - Webelos Invitational Campout[Event]

The 5th grade Webelos linked up with the Boy Scouts from Troop 131 at Cove Lake State Park the weekend of March 29th for a campout. The weather was fair with some rain during the nights but that didn't dampen any spirits. The Boy Scouts taught sessions on backpacking, fire building, first aid, and knife safety to the Webelos. The Webelos assisted the Boy Scouts in preparing and cooking meals. During free time, both groups linked up to go fishing, bike riding, played capture the flag and even launched a model rocket that went out or sight! That evening hot dogs and hamburgers were on the menu topped off with hot apple, cherry, and peach cobblers cooked in dutch ovens by the Boy Scouts topped and with ice cream. Later, all gathered around the campfire for a question and answer period and enjoyed the remaining evening. All in all, a great outing!

Bears, Wolves and Tiger Cubs Explore the World of Geology

Date: 22 February, 17:52

The den meeting on Monday, February 18, 2008 was a special event for the boys of the Bear, Wolf and Tiger Cub dens.  The event was well attended.  The Bears and Wolves each had six boys in attendance and four Tiger Cubs were present.  The meeting began with the usual pledge of allegiance.  After being introduced Eric Solt, a professional geologist with S&ME an engineering firm located in Louisville, TN, spoke to the boys about geology.  During the approximately 15 minute presentation Mr. Solt discussed the geology of the area, how rocks are formed and the different types of rocks.  The highlight of the presentation was Mr. Solt’s collection of different types of rocks and fossils.  The boys were able to put their hands on and see up close the various rocks.  The boys eagerly participated in the discussion and frequently asked questions.  Mr. Solt was very knowledgeable and gracious with the boys.  The boys were able to earn the geology belt loop and pin.  Following the presentation the Bears and Wolves made pet rocks.  A good time was had by all
